It turns out that there are scores of free Android bibles around. With such a large pool to choose from you are sure to find something you like but in most cases each app compromises on some features you may be looking for.

However, if you are looking for a capable but free Android bible study app “And Bible” should serve you well. And Bible seems to have been designed for the user who doesn’t just want to read a KJV from his or her Android phone or Tablet, but who wants to compare scriptures among various translations; look up the original Greek or Hebrew and make their own notes.

In fact, this Android bible app supports and allows you to download:

  • Bibles in over 50 languages – English, Chinese, Russian, German, French, Hungarian, Czech, Polish, Hebrew, …

  • Over 40 English Bibles including ESV, KJV and NET

  • 29 Bible commentaries

  • An extensive Christian book and dictionary collection and

  • Strong’s integration

User Experience

Opening the app will take you direct to a passage of scripture – if you used the app before it will take you to where you were reading last time around. At the top you will find links for quickly changing between versions, concordance or finding another passage.

While you can long-press any passage to access the compare translation feature, the feature only shows a comparison of the particular verse you had selected. This can be inconvenient if you want to compare large portions of passage.

It would be nice to be able to do continuous reading of various translations without having to select individual passages each time, but otherwise the version comparison feature works well.

You can also access other features with a long press including, adding a note, copying, sharing and looking at any reference or footnote that may exist for a particular passage.

Audio Bible

If you press the ‘Menu’ button and then ‘More’ you will find the audio bible option under ‘Speak’. You wont hear a natural and pleasant sounding narrator though as this audio bible is read by a speech synthesizer.

As a result, the audio feature is not very pleasing to listen to but it does have one big advantage over most audio bible apps you will find. Because a speech synthesizer is used the app doesn’t need data connection to download audio files nor does it need extra storage to save them.

Conclusion

If you need an Android bible app to can compare scripture; lookup references in a concordance as well as have a audio bible that doesn’t tax your Android’s limited storage And Bible is a good app to have. If it does meet all your needs have a look at our roundup of the best Android Bible apps.
