Another fascinating year is already behind us. The year 2013 gave us significant improvements in terms of mobile technology. Many of us have excitedly talked about upcoming Android smartphone to be announced and released in 2014. This will be a more competitive period for device manufacturers and they need to deliver highly capable models. Here are things manufacturers should consider when designing a perfect smartphone for consumers in 2014.

1. Excellent battery life: Battery life finally received more focus in 2013 and it was all started in 2012 when Motorola released the Droid RAZR Maxx with its 3300mAh cell. This year, battery life should be a focus of attention for all smartphone manufacturers. With the Android 4.4 KitKat, Google has made its mobile platform more efficient and newer mobile chips use less power than ever. Samsung’s latest AMOLED display technology is reasonably efficient and batteries with larger capacity are being tossed in smartphones.
   The Samsung Galaxy S4has a removable 2600mAh battery and everyone else already follows suit and by the end of 2013, multiple models already have batteries with 3000mAh of capacity or more.
   
   If the Droid RAZR Maxx could include a 3300mAh battery more than a year ago, then smartphones in 2014 could offer the same. Battery technology is still lagging behind and smartphone makers should begin to offer devices with insanely impressive battery life. What good is a smartphone with spacious HD display and a gazillion of new features if it won’t last very long? Users should be able to enjoy watching a movie or playing 3D games without fear of quickly running out of juice.


2. Better photography solutions: The battle will be getting tougher and tighter in the mobile photography arena. Everyone is already fighting hard to grab the “best smartphone camera” title. Nokia’s high-end Lumia snartphones have 41Mp PureView technology.
   HTC decided to take a different approach with its UltraPixel camera, which only has 4Mp sensor. Samsung doesn’t have fancy name for its camera; but it will soon deliver 16Mp camera with newer Galaxy devices. Everyone claims that it has the finest photography solution, but consumers should be able to read comparisons between these cameras from independent, neutral sources. Another thing that manufacturers should improve is low-light performance of their cameras.
   


3. Better software updates: Android community is diverse, unlike the rigidly controlled Apple’s iOS environment. Experts say that the fragmentation is an issue for Google’s operating system. But in a way, this also what makes Android wonderful. There are so many different flavors of Android. Each manufacturer and carrier offer something unique; such as preloaded apps. Users tend to appreciate more when they get new Android version more quickly, instead of a new update bloated with additional software.
   In its original form, the KitKat is already an improved form of Android OS, which could run better on low specs devices.
   


4. More accessories: The Apple iPhone is surely enticing, because users could also purchase thousands of cases, accessories and supporting devices. This is not something that accessories manufacturers can easily implement on Android ecosystem. As an alternative, smartphone manufacturers should also develop and sell accessories that enhance the usability of their smartphones. Samsung has started with solid integration between the Galaxy Note 3 phablet and Gear smartwatch.
   New technology such as Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) allows power-efficient connection with a wide range of devices, such as fitness and health tracking wristbands.
   


5. 4G LTE connectivity on entry-level models: In 2013, 4G LTE data connectivity is typically available on high-end and upper mid-tier smartphone models. This year, the technology should be mature enough for more widespread adoption in the entry-level segment. Qualcomm’s RF360 is a universal LTE model that allows smartphones to connect with multiple 4G networks provided by different carriers.
   


6. Lower pricing: With the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Apple iPhone were typically priced above $600; Google launched the Nexus 5 for just $349. It came with 5-inch 1080p display, fast Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8Mp rear-facing camera with IS and Android 4.4 KitKat. It was an excellent offering from the company and still one of the best smartphones money can by on early months of 2014. The Motorola Moto G is also a good example of smartphone with marvelous value. For just $179, users could get Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 4.5-inch 720p display, 1GB of RAM and 5Mp rear-facing camera.

Perfect smartphones in 2014 don’t have to be expensive and the most important thing is to ensure good value that users could get. Of course, we could also talk about huge 2K display, fast octa-core processor, aluminum chassis and removable, high-capacity battery. But in the end, each consumer could have different opinions about models that are perfect for them. Smartphones will continue to get faster and bigger, but some users still want smaller models with reasonable pricing.
